Taking data to verify the HPF science fiber position

  1. You'll need decent seeing (no worse than 2") and very stable transparency for this test (thin clouds will ruin it!). Find a time when one of the M-dwarfs in ENG20-2-000 is available with plenty of time (test should take about 25-30min after setup is complete).
  1. Set up on one of these bright M-dwarfs with HPFACAM ("regular") setup.
  1. After "setup_complete", activate a WFS, allow to stabilize for ~1 minute.
  1. Ask the TO to turn OFF the guider PID loops
  1. Deploy ACQ camera mirror:
on the ACQ camera, store a very short exposure in i filter, not saturating star if possible; note the time stamp of this exposure
on the ACQ camera, store a longer exposure (30-90s, to see N>6 stars); note the timestamp of this exposure
  1. Retract the ACQ camera mirror
  1. Run the test script located in /home/mcs/astronomer/stevenj/hpfcent/

./gc1_hpf_centering.sh if you are guiding on GC1
./gc2_hpf_centering.sh if you are guiding on GC2
This will take 14 exposures which are 21s each, doing fiducial offsets with "sleep" commands between each, following the pattern shown in the diagram below. This script should take approximately

  1. After that script finishes, the ACQ camera mirror should be automatically deployed:
on the ACQ camera, store a very short exposure in i filter, not saturating star if possible; note the time stamp of this exposure
on the ACQ camera, store a longer exposure (same length as before, to see N>6 stars); note the timestamp of this exposure
  1. This concludes the test - resume science observations.
