Overview of the basic night time procedures

Afternoon checkout

suggested order of OPS procedure.

  • run

syscmd -l 'get_cryo_pressure( update_state="true" )'

to check LRS2 VG pressure. If got 999999 that means that VG need to be enabled and one need to wait 15 minutes before read out pressure

  • turn off VG and ion pump. Important!!!! please leave LRS2*-VacuumGauge? on on APC GUI. To disable or enable VG use commands
syscmd -l 'disable_pressure_gauges()' # should be run during OPS after pressure reading
syscmd -l 'enable_pressure_gauges()' # should be run RA in the morning

  • check instruments temperatures
  • take lrs2 and virus test cals
  • document VIRUS enclosure temperatures
  • do test move of the guide probes (home4 or home5)
  • take any long cals that can be done

When servers are DOWN

  • On TO Launcher on TO console > Operations > Start Console and all servers
  • Answer "Y"

Detailed list

  • Check the temperatures of the instruments ===
    • For LRS2 use the RA launcher application (Tracker tab)
      • CCD temps (L,R for Red, & Blue) should be around -115.0
      • Cryo temps should be around -169.0
      • the temp check window remains open for 30 seconds
    • Frequently temps will not report for LRS2 and it is useful to restart the server:
          [astronomer@mcs ~]$ ssh -X sco@lrs2
[sco@lrs2 ~]$ sudo service ldas restart

Wait for several minutes until the green LRS2 light appears in the TCS gui.
  • For VIRUS use the RA launcher application (Tracker tab)
    • Cryo temps should be close to -168
  • Record VIRUS enclosure temperatures from "VIRUS Environment" tab in TCS gui
    • Lower Elect. Enncl. Temp
    • Upper VIRUS Encl. Temp.
    • Lower VIRUS Encl. Temp
    • Encl Heat Exchg. In Temp
  • Ask OPS Eng to turn on the servers
    • servers needed are: tracker, tcs, pas, pfip, legacy
    • If the servers are not up (as indicated by the tcs gui buttons) then you can start them from guider@htcs with:
      startsys -v -g -T -P -p -L or just bring up PFIP with startsys -v -P
    • to see help:
      startsys -h
  • Take test exposures

The following check of VIRUS should take about 6 minutes to complete:
$HET_SRC_ROOT/integration/cal.py -i virus -l lamp1a lamp2a -L 1 -c ldls -C 1 -d 0 -b 1 -o 9990 | & tee -a virus-cal.2016MMDD.log

  • Recall that you can use the same log name for multiple runs (the results will be append each time you run cal.py)
  • Examples of images: Sample cal images for VIRUS

The following check of LRS2 should take about 11 minutes to complete:
$HET_SRC_ROOT/integration/cal.py -i lrs2 -l lamp3a -L 1 -c lamp5b -C 1 -d 0 -b 1 -o 9990 | & tee -a lrs-cal.2016MMDD.log

  • Check lrs2 vacuum pressure

Turn on the vacuum gauge in the apcGui. Run the pfeiffer.py scrWFUCommissioning/wiki/ipt. (In case of error try to run the script second time about 1 min after turning of vacuum gage):Take twilight spectra

First any imaging cameras LRS2 spectra

/opt/het/hetdex/src/tcs/trunk/camra/testing/pfeiffer.py

Note: Sometimes you have to enter this several times before you get a prompt back. Then enter the following commands:

	on 1
	on 2
wait about 15 minutes for the gauge to warm up
	pressure 1
	pressure 2
	exit off

Here is a complete run:

[sco@lrs2 ~]$ /opt/het/hetdex/src/tcs/trunk/camra/testing/pfeiffer.py

  • Test guide probe motions
    [astronomer@mcs ~]$ home6 (or home5, home4, etc...)

    • Watch probe display on tcs gui to insure that probes move
  • If you can make the dome dark for 1.5 hours:
    • Take full set of VIRUS cals (0.5 hours)
    • Take full set of LRS2 cals (1.0 hours)
  • Problems you might encounter

Start of the Night

  • Check the temperatures of the instruments
  • Check on status of the LRS2 ion pump and VG
  • Check e-mails to see if PV or other engineering sky flats are required
  • Check plan for the night or the latest plan located here
  • Use chksys to see if any defunct processes such as the APC or Gui exist. Kill those processes.
  • Start Monitors for instruments and TCS see LRS2 and VIRUS procedures.
  • Walk around dome area to make sure lights and mothenators are off.
  • Take twilight spectra (start GC2 and check flux level - ~30k LRS2 and 4.7k virus for B filter and exp 0.1s)
    • First any imaging cameras
    • LRS2 spectra
    • VIRUS spectra
For LRS2:
$ syscmd -v -l 'expose( seconds=15, x_binning=1, y_binning=1, type="twi", object="twilight", observation=1, exposure=1 )'
For VIRUS:
$ syscmd -v -V 'expose( seconds=15, x_binning=2, y_binning=1, type="twi", object="twilight", observation=1, exposure=1 )'

End of the Night

Data should transfer itself to the TACC so no action from the RA should be required.

Email the PI. Recall that the Contact Emails can be found on the RA Night Report Form.

Take end of night calibrations

  • Full calibration script for VIRUS (30 minutes)
  • Full calibration script for LRS2 (40 minutes)

Park the instruments

  • Turn on LRS2 ion pump and VG see LRS2 park procedure
  • record the final LRS2 temperatures, VIRUS temperatures and enclosure temperatures into the RA log.
  • Make sure the LRS2 and VIRUS servers, pivot and monitors are running
  • Use chksys to see if any defunct processes such as the APC or Gui exist. Kill those processes.

Shut down the DIMM software and close the DIMM. See DIMM wiki page
