20160520 Commissioning Plan

Priorities for test are in the order listed in the plan below.

Find out from Brian if the telescope if fully functional or which components should not be moved or tested and adjust the plan below accordingly.

Twilight

Before Sunset at Az 155 (or Az 0) please take a set of CWFS, WFS1, WFS2 & PV images

Be sure to power off the PV and CWFS when done.

Please take twilight LRS2 and VIRUS exposures that have good flux (more than 10,000 ADU) but not saturated on either LRS2b, LRS2r, or VIRUS

If clear do the following checkout tests have the highest priority:

  • Get on a star field and check basic pointing and ACAM field orientation
  • Near center of track, check out pupil on the ACAM and see what position you get on the tip-tilt camera. If position significantly different note new position in wiki.
  • Confirm that you can acquire guide stars for GC1 and GC2
  • Near center of track, confirm that ACAM is roughly (within .1 mm) cofocal with GC1 and GC2. Do focus curves on all three cameras.
  • Once in focus on ACAM with good tip-tilt (just after stacking) look at the DMI value. It should be near 12.806450 or so (this can vary by about 100 um).
  • Confirm that you can guide with GC1, GC2 and ACAM
  • Put a target on LRS2-B position ACAM position and take a spectrum to confirm ACAM is in the correct position; repeat with LRS2-R
  • While you have a star on the GC1, GC2 and ACAM confirm that you can move filters and that flux levels change in a reasonable way
  • Take a spectrum of a star on a VIRUS IFU and confirm that the star appears near the center of the IFU. Confirm that Dither seems to work.

On sky engineering tests:

Pointing zero points

Procedure:

  • Observe a somewhat bright (~10th mag) star at the center of track every 15 degrees in Az pointing to the IHMP.
  • Make sure that tip-tilt is running and that you are in focus.
  • Save an image with ACAM and record the star position (x,y in pixels) in the night log along with the Az, tracker X and tracker Y.

Closed dome or post-pointing test

Test exposure times for all lamps in cal.py. When complete inform Jim Fowler that the cal.py needs to be checked back in to svn.

Take long darks (same as long darks from regular calibrations, 10min I think...) with LRS2 with the ion pumps on, to measure the stray light associated with them
