20161218 Commissioning Plan

Priorities for test are in the order listed in the plan below.

NOTE: The DMI should now be run for every trajectory with a 10 second cycle time.

Highest Priority: Engineering; do any support for WFS commissioning and parallel script testing.

Lowest Priority: Science Targets in dark/grey time.

twilights tests

VIRUS special twilights

Purpose: There is some interest in seeing what the long term illumination correction changes look like including what different track positions do to them. The script is "specialtwilight" in /home/mcs/astronomer/bin/. It takes a single argument which is the Observation number.

Procedure:

  • Setup the guide camera for sky twilight (GC2, 0.1 sec exposure, B filter)
  • When you hit the correct flux level (biased to a slight higher value, perhaps 5k) execute the specialtwilight script

Night time engineering:

CWFS+WFS Loop Constrol Tests

  • Make sure your stack is pretty good (RSE < 250)
  • Make sure GROC is pretty well set
  • Select a 12th mag target near the start of the track for all probes and targetted on IHMP using shuffle and shuffle_config_matt4
  • Setup on IHMP
  • Center up both guide probes and start guiding on one of the guiders
  • Offset to CWFS using syscmd -T 'offset_trajectory(dx_ang=-5.5, dy_ang=0.0, adjust_probes="true")'
  • Tweak up the position on the IHMP using further offset_trajectory commands.
  • Center up both WFS using mgp -grid or mgp -poff. See mgp --help
  • Null out focus on WFS1. NOTE: WFS1 seems to perform better than WFS2 at the edges of the track
  • Start metrology loop and Activate the loop on WFS1.
  • Hit "store images" and "Start Metrology Loop" for GC1, GC2, WFS1, WFS2, TT, CWFS, DMI (although there are no images for DMI)
  • Run until the end of the track.

Run full tracks with bib camera+ to assess centroid drag

  • Use do_shuffle to setup on a V=12 star near start of track
  • See that previous two plans for notes on how we modified the flane.txt file for this.
  • Have TO focus up and have RA center at least one OWFS
  • Use GUI in PAS to move star to bib and hold probes on their targets
  • close focus loop
  • set bib exposure to 2sec (for V=12 star)
  • Record a time in the log
  • Use TO save images button to save gc1,gc2.wf1,wf2,bib images
  • It is good to chek that "Store Images" button is now clicked in all camera gu
  • In this test we should NEVER apply X,Y offset corrections
  • If TO makes a Tip-Tilt change record the time in the log
  • If TO makes a GRoC correction record the time in the log
  • Run until the end of track
  • when done, record a time in the log

Science with LRS2 or VIRUS

  • Select targets based on Priority and to a lesser extent modified priority
  • Try to use WFS1 during science targets if possible NOTE: Probably not possible for LRS2-B -> LRS2-R sequence tests.
  • Save PSU17-1-002 and PSU17-1-005 for times when other high priority targets can't be done, ie. those programs have targets at all times of the night.
  • For the first half of the night:
    • Do M17-1-001 in the only south track at the start of the night P0 visits then P1
    • Do UT17-1-015 during dark time until P1 done
    • Split gray time between UT17-1-011 and UT17-1-014 until P1 done NOTE: For UT17-1-011 the PI put in their secondary preference in the tenths column of the priority, e.g. 1.0 higher priority than 1.1.

Closed dome engineering for bad weather, or while stacking:

Long VIRUS darks

Purpose: In each RA run take 10 x 6 minute dark with a dark dome with VIRUS. Report this in the RA report and send e-mail to Karl that this has been done.

Closed dome trajectories

Purpose: Exercise the system to find any problems with the upgrades recently done to TMCS and TCS.

Procedure:

  • Send a trajectory from do_shuffle
  • Setup on trajectory, including moving all guide probes to position
  • Put on some light in the dome
  • Run all cameras.
  • Run WFS1 and WFS2 with processing enabled.
  • Make offsets on all guiders and ACAM.

Repeat multiple times during the night as long as the weather does not allow you to open. Report any problems with shuffle or TCS.
